Operation Warm ( www.operationwarm.org) is a nationally registered 501(c)3 charity that raises money to provide new, American made coats to children in need.  Operation Warm has been around since 1998 and partnered with the International Association of Firefighters in 2012.  Each coat is $34.  All contributions are tax deductible.

In 2014, the Lincoln Firefighters Association of the International Association of Firefighters Local #644 decided to bring the Operation Warm charity to Lincoln.  We started with a goal of 50 coats, we really didn't know what to expect or really how to raise money.  We started with putting up signs in the stations and asked a few businesses for help.  The response was amazing!  We were able to raise enough money to put a new coat on every child at Elliott Elementary School (25th & N), over 410 coats.  We chose Elliott because 88% of the school was enrolled in the free/reduced cost lunch program according to the Nebraska Department of Education.  In order to qualify for this program, a family of 4 must earn less than $31, 590.  It was really a great experience, the kids were so excited.  After talking with the teachers and hearing how school attendance suffers in the winter because some kids don't have the basics, it only solidified to us that we were doing a good thing.  Here is the story from Ch 8 news, http://www.klkntv.com/story/26817366/lincoln-firefighters-give-400-students-new-coats

In 2015, We selected Clinton Elementary School (29th & Holdrege) as our school to give back to.  Clinton had an enrollment of approximately 550 students with about 88% receiving reduced cost/free meals according to the Nebraska Department of Education.  We see the need for this Coat Drive on a daily basis.  The children can’t help the situations they are born into.  If we can put a smile on a child’s face or help them make it to school a couple more days per year because of these coats, then it is worth our time. In 2016, we have chosen McPhee Elementary(16th and G) and Hartley Elementary(33rd and Vine) as our schools to give back to.  These 2 schools have a combined enrollment of about 700 students, of which about 87% are enrolled in the lunch program.
